NYMPHAEA LOTUS – African Aquarium Plant with Decorative Red-Brown or Green Leaves

Nymphaea lotus, also known as tiger lotus or Egyptian lotus, is one of the most visually stunning aquatic plants available for aquariums. Native to West Africa, it is admired for its broad leaves that range from deep green to red-brown, often adorned with striking purple spots. It’s a highly decorative choice for open tanks and natural aquascapes.

Reaching a height of 20 to 80 cm, this plant grows underwater leaves at first, followed by the development of floating leaves. To prevent surface leaves from shading other plants, regular pruning of roots and older leaves is recommended. Nymphaea lotus thrives in nutrient-rich substrates and medium to high lighting, making it ideal for well-maintained planted tanks.

In open aquariums with optimal conditions, this species may even bloom, producing fragrant flowers that emerge above the water surface—adding an exotic, tropical charm to any setup. Often available in both red and green forms, it’s best used as a solitary focal plant in large aquariums.
