Each liter of Matrix provides over 160,000 cm² (170 m²) of surface area for dense bacterial colonization—more than 40 liters of conventional media.
Its highly porous structure supports both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Aerobic bacteria on the outer surface convert ammonia to nitrites and then nitrates, while anaerobic bacteria within the internal pores reduce nitrates to nitrogen gas, which is safely released at the water’s surface. This process ensures a balanced nitrogen cycle and reduces maintenance needs.
Matrix is compatible with all filter types and is particularly effective in sumps, canister filters, and filter compartments. Sold by volume to guarantee consistent biological performance even in smaller systems.
