Calcium and carbonates are essential for coral growth, and a deficiency in either halts growth and can negatively impact the overall health of the system. When used correctly, Reef Carbonate does not deplete calcium, magnesium, or strontium, which typically decline as alkalinity rises. To ensure a stable environment, reef alkalinity should be maintained between 3–5 meq (8–14 dKH), never dropping below 2 meq.
