Upon delivery, the leaves display a serrated edge, but after a short adaptation period in the aquarium, they transform into long, finely serrated, needle-like leaves.

This species varies in form depending on its origin: the Tropica cultivar originates from Isla de la Juventud off the coast of Cuba, while in the United States, it’s commonly known as “mermaid weed.”
