STAUROGYNE REPENS – Slow-Growing Foreground Plant for Freshwater Aquariums

Staurogyne repens is a popular aquarium plant known for its compact, bushy structure and creeping growth pattern. Native to Brazil and part of the Acanthaceae family, it resembles a miniature version of Hygrophila and is a top choice for foreground planting in aquascaping layouts or nature-style tanks.

This plant grows slowly but thrives under optimal conditions with high lighting, rich substrate nutrition, and CO₂ supplementation. When trimmed regularly, the plant produces numerous horizontal shoots, eventually forming a lush, dense carpet. Its horizontal spread and resilience make it a favorite for creating neat, natural foregrounds.

Staurogyne repens pairs beautifully with other carpeting plants like Hemianthus callitrichoides, contributing contrasting textures and enhancing the visual depth of the aquascape. Best suited to high-tech aquariums, it prefers temperatures between 22–28°C, a slightly acidic pH, and soft to medium water hardness.
