ECHINODORUS GRISEBACHII ‘BLEHERAE’ – Fast-Growing Amazon Sword Plant for Tropical Aquarium Backgrounds
Echinodorus grisebachii ‘Bleherae’ is one of the most popular and widely used aquatic plants in freshwater aquariums. Native to South America and often referred to as the "Amazon sword plant," it features long, ribbon-like leaves and a robust growth habit, making it ideal as a background plant in medium to large tanks. Its impressive size and lush appearance make it a dominant focal point in any aquascape.
The broad green leaves can grow 3 to 6 cm wide and over 60 cm long in optimal conditions, making it larger than similar species like Echinodorus ‘Amazonicus’. Mature clusters can develop over 50 leaves, offering excellent cover for fish and natural shade for more delicate plant species.
To thrive, Echinodorus ‘Bleherae’ requires a nutrient-rich substrate at least 10 cm deep to accommodate its extensive root system. Supplemental root fertilizers or aquasoils are recommended. It prefers medium to high lighting and benefits greatly from a consistent CO₂ supply of 20–30 mg/l, promoting healthy and rapid growth.
This species is particularly suited for South American biotope aquascapes. Pairing it with smaller relatives like Helanthium (formerly Echinodorus ‘nano’) creates a dynamic foreground-to-background transition. Propagation is easy via adventitious plantlets that grow along the flower stalk, which can be detached and replanted.
