ECHINODORUS OZELOT – Hardy and Decorative Aquarium Plant with Red-Brown Spotted Leaves
Echinodorus 'Ozelot' is a striking hybrid aquarium plant, resulting from the cross between Echinodorus schluteri 'Leopard' and Echinodorus 'Barthii'. It is well-known for its elliptical red-brown leaves adorned with prominent black spots, which give it a unique and decorative appearance resembling the coat of the ocelot, the wild cat it is named after. Growing to a height of 20–50 cm with a rosette width of up to 40 cm, it is ideal as a background or centerpiece plant in medium to large aquariums.
One of the most remarkable features of Echinodorus 'Ozelot' is its ability to maintain the dark spots on its leaves even under moderate lighting, unlike many other spotted Echinodorus varieties. The younger leaves show darker and more intense markings, making the plant visually dynamic over time. It adapts well to a variety of conditions and is well-suited even for beginners in aquascaping.
This species is undemanding and grows well in nutrient-rich substrates or with the addition of root capsules. Although enhanced by good lighting and CO₂ supplementation, it will also thrive under simpler setups. Echinodorus 'Ozelot' fits perfectly in Dutch-style or nature aquascapes, where it adds volume, color, and structure. Under optimal conditions, it produces side shoots regularly, allowing for easy propagation.
