MICROSORUM PTEROPUS AND ANUBIAS BARTERI CALADIFOLIA ON MANGROVE WOOD – Decorative Epiphytic Plants for Freshwater Aquariums
Microsorum pteropus and Anubias barteri var. caladifolia are two of the most popular and resilient epiphytic plants in aquascaping, presented here pre-attached to natural mangrove wood. This ready-to-use decorative element is ideal for enhancing any aquarium with both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits, requiring no planting or complex setup.
Microsorum pteropus, also known as Java fern, is a robust aquatic plant native to Asia, reaching 15–30 cm in height. It must be grown attached to wood or rock—never buried—since covering the rhizome can cause it to rot. Once established, it anchors easily with adventitious roots and can be propagated by dividing the rhizome. It grows well under low light and without CO₂, but displays richer coloration under stronger lighting. The black spots under the leaves are natural sporangia (reproductive organs), not disease.
Anubias barteri var. caladifolia is a tissue-cultured variety known for its large, heart-shaped, thick leaves that can last for years. Though slow-growing, it can form dense clusters over 50 cm wide over time. Like all Anubias species, it must be attached to hardscape, as burying the rhizome leads to decay. Extremely hardy, it thrives in low light and nutrient-poor conditions, and is ideal for tanks with herbivorous fish.
