STAUROGYNE REPENS – Compact and Hardy Foreground Aquarium Plant

Staurogyne repens is a low-growing, compact, and resilient aquarium plant, ideal for the foreground of freshwater tanks. Native to the Rio Cristalino in southern Amazonia, it is widely appreciated in aquascaping and natural layouts for its tidy growth and ease of cultivation. Although closely related to Hygrophila, Staurogyne repens is distinct in its dense, bushy structure, short height, and small green leaves that form a neat carpet across the substrate.

The plant typically grows to a height of 5–10 cm, with each stem measuring about 3–4 cm wide. When planting in the aquarium, trimming longer vertical shoots is recommended to encourage horizontal runners from the base. These new shoots will gradually spread across the gravel, creating a natural and anchored ground cover.

This plant thrives under moderate lighting and benefits from regular fertilization. It adapts well to various setups, including low-tech tanks, and is also suitable for shrimp and small bottom-dwelling fish.
