ELEOCHARIS PUSILLA – Dwarf Foreground Grass for Natural Aquascapes, Ideal for Iwagumi Layouts and Cool Water Tanks
Eleocharis pusilla, also known as dwarf spike rush, is a compact grass-like plant from Australia and New Zealand. It is prized for its very short height—usually 5 to 6 cm—and its light green, slightly arching stems, which provide a soft, uniform carpet across the foreground of the aquarium.
Unlike its taller cousin Eleocharis acicularis, this plant remains ultra-low and is best suited for Iwagumi-style layouts, where it beautifully complements stone hardscapes and minimalist designs. Eleocharis pusilla propagates through runners, allowing it to form dense, natural lawns over time. It grows best under medium to high light with a steady supply of CO₂, and thrives in cooler water conditions, ideally between 12–25 °C.
Due to its sensitivity to heat, it is not recommended for tropical aquariums without temperature control. However, in the right conditions, it produces a lush, low-maintenance summer-green carpet that enhances depth and realism in aquascapes of all sizes.
