ECHINODORUS PALAEFOLIUS – Versatile and Decorative Aquarium Plant with Submerged or Emerged Growth
Echinodorus palaefolius var. latifolius is a Brazilian aquatic plant highly valued for its flexibility and graceful appearance. In its natural marsh-like habitat, it develops a horizontal leaf base. In submerged conditions, the plant forms long, narrow leaves reaching 20–40 cm in length, accompanied by a rosette measuring between 20 and 40 cm in diameter. It is well suited as a background or midground plant in medium to large aquariums.
A distinctive feature of Echinodorus palaefolius is its tendency to grow above the water surface. To keep it submerged and compact, simply trim the longest leaves before they reach the surface. New leaves will then grow shorter and remain underwater. In open-top aquariums, the plant can grow emersed, adding verticality and natural movement, although low air humidity can cause the leaf edges to dry out.
Echinodorus palaefolius is easy to grow and thrives under medium to high light with a nutrient-rich substrate. While CO₂ is not essential, its addition improves growth and coloration. It fits well in natural aquascapes and South American biotopes, creating a dynamic and lush backdrop. The plant propagates through side shoots or plantlets that form on the flower stalk.
