ELEOCHARIS ACICULARIS – Foreground Grass-like Plant for Dense and Natural Aquascape Carpets
Eleocharis acicularis, also known as needle spikerush, is a cosmopolitan aquatic plant prized for its fine, grass-like appearance and its ability to form thick carpets across the aquarium foreground. A member of the Cyperaceae family, this species adapts well to a variety of conditions, thriving in both cool and warmer waters, making it an ideal choice for natural aquascapes and nature-style layouts.
Under the right conditions, Eleocharis acicularis sends out lateral runners that spread through the substrate, gradually creating a compact and uniform carpet of thin, upright stems. It can grow up to 15 cm tall, and trimming the emerged portions before planting is recommended for faster adaptation. Plant each divided clump about 5 cm apart to encourage even coverage. Submerged leaves will begin to appear within days, indicating healthy root establishment.
This plant performs best under moderate to high lighting, with CO₂ injection and regular fertilization. Its moderate growth rate makes it easy to manage and maintain, especially for aquarists looking for a reliable and low-maintenance carpeting option.
