MICROSORUM PTEROPUS – Java Fern Epiphyte for Freshwater Aquariums
Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java fern, is one of the most widely used and appreciated epiphytic plants in aquascaping due to its resilience, easy care, and elegant appearance. Native to tropical Asia, this aquatic fern grows slowly to a height of 15–30 cm and thrives in a wide range of aquarium setups, from natural biotopes to modern scapes.
Java fern must be attached to driftwood or rocks rather than planted in substrate—its woody rhizome will rot if buried. It can be tied with fishing line until the roots anchor naturally. This plant is perfect for low-tech tanks, requiring no CO₂ and thriving even under low light.
Its lance-shaped green leaves are tough and attractive, and may display black spots underneath, which are reproductive sporangia—not signs of disease. Propagation is easy by cutting the rhizome horizontally and fixing the sections to new surfaces. Under strong lighting, its foliage takes on a more vibrant green hue.
