ECHINODORUS ARGENTINENSIS – Large Background Aquatic Plant for Open Aquariums
Echinodorus argentinensis is a large sword plant from the Alismataceae family, native to South America and now found also in the United States. It is one of the tallest Echinodorus varieties, growing up to 50–60 cm, making it ideal for large or open-top aquariums where it can fully develop without space restrictions.
This species has strong, ornamental leaves that can also grow emerged, making it suitable for paludariums or semi-emersed setups. When grown in optimal conditions, it produces elegant white flowers on long floral stalks, adding a natural and scenic touch to the aquascape. It thrives in a nutrient-rich substrate with medium to high lighting and benefits greatly from regular fertilization.
Main features:
Background plant with moderate growth, up to 60 cm tall
Sturdy decorative leaves, ideal for open layouts
Requires nutrient-rich substrate and good lighting
Produces white flowers under optimal conditions
Tolerates hard water and is relatively easy to maintain
Cultivation and aquascaping:
Echinodorus argentinensis should be planted in the background area, where it can grow tall without overshadowing smaller plants. Suitable for tanks of at least 150 liters, it requires a CO₂ supply of 20–30 mg/l, water temperatures between 18–28°C, and a pH range from 5 to 9. Water hardness can range from very soft to hard.
Why choose Echinodorus argentinensis:
Impressive plant for large aquarium backgrounds
Suitable for open tanks and paludariums
Tolerates a wide range of water hardness
Adds vertical structure and visual depth to aquascapes
Perfect for South American biotopes with discus or angelfish
