STAUROGYNE REPENS – Compact and Creeping Foreground Plant for Aquascaping
Staurogyne repens is a compact, slow-growing aquarium plant ideal for foreground placement in freshwater tanks. Native to the Rio Cristalino in southern Amazonia, this species is appreciated for its bushy habit, vibrant green leaves, and low-growing structure. Although it is related to Hygrophila, it is much more compact, with short stems and narrow leaves measuring approximately 3.4 cm wide.
In the aquarium, Staurogyne repens typically reaches a height of 5–10 cm. For best results, vertical shoots should be trimmed to stimulate horizontal spreading through new creeping runners. Under strong lighting and moderate CO₂ supplementation, it maintains a compact, carpeting form. In low-light conditions, however, it tends to grow upright and produces fewer lateral shoots.
Grown in vitro, it is completely free from snails, parasites, and harmful substances, making it perfectly safe for shrimp tanks and sensitive species. The nutrient gel used ensures quick adaptation and healthy establishment. This plant is a favorite choice for aquascapers who aim for a clean, natural look.
