HEMIANTHUS CALLITRICHOIDES 'CUBA' – The Smallest Carpet Plant for Aquarium Foreground

Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba' is recognized as the world’s smallest aquarium plant, with leaves only a few millimeters wide. Originally discovered in a stream on the island of Cuba, this remarkable species has become a staple for creating dense, compact green carpets in the aquarium foreground. With a growth height of just 3 to 5 cm, it provides a unique natural and ornamental effect, especially when combined with rocks and driftwood in aquascaping layouts.

Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba' is highly adaptable to various water parameters, tolerating a wide range of pH and hardness levels. However, for optimal growth and dense carpet formation, strong lighting and adequate CO₂ supplementation are essential. Emersed-grown plants can be divided into small portions and planted easily, forming a thick, uniform lawn within a few weeks, perfect for natural or Dutch-style aquascapes.
