ROTALA INDICA 'BONSAI' – Vertically Growing Compact Aquarium Plant with Dense Rounded Leaves

Rotala indica 'Bonsai' is a compact and ornamental aquarium plant from Southeast Asia, formerly known as Ammania spec. Bonsai. It is the true Rotala indica, long mistaken for Rotala rotundifolia. Unlike that species, it features small, dense, oval to round leaves that show minimal difference between submerged and emersed forms. Its slow and vertical growth habit makes it perfect for foreground or midground placement in organized aquascapes.

The densely packed, rounded leaves form neat vertical stems, lending a highly decorative and structured look. This makes the plant especially suitable for Dutch-style layouts or formal aquascapes. Under strong light and with CO₂ supplementation, it grows up to 30–40 cm tall, maintaining a clean, compact form. It also stands out beautifully when grouped among low-growing carpeting plants like Hemianthus, adding structured contrast.

Main features:

  • Oval to round leaves densely arranged along upright stems

  • Slow, vertical, and compact growth pattern

  • Reaches up to 30–40 cm, perfect for foreground or midground

  • Needs medium to high light and CO₂ for best results

  • Ideal for formal or Dutch-style aquascapes

  • Effective in small ornamental groups or neat clusters

  • Minimal difference between submerged and emersed leaf forms

Why choose Rotala indica 'Bonsai':

Structured, elegant, and compact, Rotala indica 'Bonsai' is perfect for aquarists seeking visual order and soft contrast. Its dense foliage and predictable growth allow precise placement in foreground zones and help shape refined aquascapes. A reliable, low-maintenance plant with strong decorative value.
